Kenyatta University Blak Blad will face Strathmore University in the finals of the 2011 Resolution Health Impala Floodlit Universities Competition after pulling off a 23-5 win over debutantes Multi Media University.
Blad found themselves struggling to break down a well organized Multi Media , who time and again shut them out. Constantly asking questions of the Mbagathi side, Blad won a penalty that Kevin Ochieng slotted home for a 3-0 lead on eleven minutes. Another Ochieng penalty on thirteen minutes saw the Thika Road side take a 6-0 lead. Multi Media showed flashes of brilliance but just couldn't put any points on the board.

Ochieng coverted a 51st minute penalty to give Blad a 13-0 lead before Simon Ngugi's consolation try reduced the deficit to 13-5. Further tries from Dan Lanya and Calvin Nyeusi saw Blad win 23-5
Ivo Wataka, the Blad head coach said, "we performed below par..we can do better…our strong points today were in the forwards…but we will polish up and face Strath."
Strathmore University beat pre-match favorites USIU to book a berth in the final of the inaugural Universities category at the 2011 Resolution Health Impala Floodlit tournament. The Nairobi West based side ran off with a 15-10 result.Peter Muiruri put the victors 3-0 ahead following a 15th minute penalty that was the culmination of a tense start to this tie. USIU would grow in stature, seeing more of the ball. Edward Gicheru grounded the ball, putting the Thika Road side 5-3 ahead on 27 minutes.
The first half would remain a closely contested affair as USIU took a 5-3 lead heading into the breather.Second half action saw David Gitau restore Strathmore's lead with an early unconverted try before Edwin Osege's converted try put daylight between them and USIU. A late USIU try was not enough to save them from defeat.Speaking after the game, Strathmore coach Mitch Ocholla said, "the win showed a sign of depth within the Strathmore side...the forwards won it for us..the composure of Peter Muiruri and Edwin Osege's experience were also critical for us."

Kenya Harlequin FC successfully defended their Christie Sevens title with a come from behind 15-10 win over Mwamba RFC in the main cup final played at the RFUEA Grounds on Sunday afternoon.

It was Mwamba RFC who fired the first salvo, retaining possession from kick off. Their first foray into Quins territory saw Humphrey Kayange power his way to an unconverted try. ..5-0 to the black shirts…
They continued to dominate Quins, particularly at the contact points and forced the quartered shirts into a series of unforced errors. Tournament MVP Edgar Abere soon stretched Kulabu’s lead with a second unconverted try…10-0...Mwamba…

Mwamba would continue to enjoy the upper hand in this half but failed to translate their possession into the most important statistic on the day…points.

Felix Ochieng’s half time pep talk must have fired up the home side for they came into the second half filled with zeal, prodding Mwamba as they clawed their way back from the dead. Their pressure paid off when Victor Sudi touched down, cutting Mwamba’s lead to five points.

An unforced error from Horace Otieno gifted Quins their second try. His attempt at keeping the ball in play from an opportunistic Quins punt went horribly wrong and second half substitute William Ambaka was on hand to pick up the pieces and score the easiest of tries. Bondo summed up this tragicomedy by inexplicably missing the conversion in front of the sticks. Mwamba 10 Quins 10

This result sees Quins perched atop the Western Union National Sevens Circuit with 24 points, four more than second placed Mwamba RFC.

Quins beat Strathmore Leos 19-7 in the quarter final before registering a 17-10 semi final result with tries from Patrice Agunda(2) and David Ambunya. Naftali Bondo managed one conversion.

Mwamba made it courtesy of a 31-7 quarter final win over Kisumu RFC and a 28-0 semi final result over Impala RFC in a match that saw tournament top try scorer Collins Injera land twice with Edgar Abere and Humphrey Kayange adding the other tries. Kevin Wambua managed three conversions with Injera converting the other try.

Mwamba RFC led seven other teams including National Sevens Circuit champions Strathmore Leos and Christie Sevens champions Kenya Harlequin FC in making the main cup quarter finals of the 2010 Christie Sevens, qualifying with a perfect record from Pool A.

Boasting their full compliment of Kenya Sevens internationals,the black shirts beat Kenya Methodist University 29-0, Nondescript RUFC 45-0 and Strathmore Leos 36-7 in a match that saw Collins Injera and Humphery Kayange feature among the try scorers.

Pool B

Kenya Harlequin FC survived an early scare against Kenyatta University's Blak Blad in their opening Pool B match, securing a 24-7 victory before going on to register identical 26-0 wins over Daystar University and Kisumu RFC respectively. Kisumu RFC joined them in the main cup quarter finals following wins over Daystar Universtiy and Blak Blad.

Pool C

Nakuru RFC had a relatively easy day at the office, beating Bungoma RFC 35-5 before stopping Egerton University 31-5 in the Rift Valley derby. The Wanyore had to rally from 0-7 to defeat Mean Machine 17-7,a result that saw them claim first place in Pool C. Machine join them in the main cup quarters on the back of earlier victories over Egerton University and Bungoma RFC during the pool stages.

Pool D

Events in this pool make for interesting reading. The unfancied Homeboyz RFC caused the biggest upset on day one with a 19-12 win over Kenya Commercial Bank in a match that was more memorable for the physical, often confrontational course that it opted to take. Pool winners Impala RFC would then run over Quins II 43-0 and took pole position with a narrow 19-12 win over Homeboyz RFC. KCB labour to a 22-0 win over Quins II and looked dead and buried after Homeboyz easily beat Quins II 26-0.

The bankers would rally from a 0-5 deficit, beating Impala RFC 19-5, a result that saw them sneak into the main cup quarters thanks to their superior points difference, something that relegated Homeboyz to third place.

The first match was against makerere university impis,a tight affair the blad won 5 to nil followed by the ruthless dissection of debutantes barclays.r.f.c ofwhich we won 41 t 0 .ultimately this as the game where trouble started with captain george okoa pulling his hamstring on my way the try line,weakening our squad to face strathmore leos significantly.we met the eventual joint champs with the cup quterfinal berth secured but alot of campus pride on the line.the blakkies lost 17 to 7.By qualifying as one of the two best runners up,our fate was in our hand.turns out the previous day's pool game was a curtain raiser to a quater's date with the leos which the blakkies again lost to strath 17to 7 setting up a plate semi with the old enemy mean machine.Perhaps inexperienced cost us and the young squad couldn't kill off the tie despite huge possession thus opening a window through which machine sneaked a 5 to nil win.

Kevin O'Byrne was outstanding on the sports field, having been captain of rugby, soccer and tennis when he was in university. The same enthusiasm was directed into Kenyan sports and the moment he landed here, Harlequins Rugby Football Club took him on as a scrum- half after hearing news of his exploits in the Irish league. He virtually introduced the sport to black Kenyans who had never played the game before but got a chance after he exposed them to the Nairobi club scene. Steve Robi who played club rugby in the league explained, "Just before I finished high school back in 1967, he would take me, Ishmael Ramadhan, Lewis Maina and Hakeem Folami to the rugby clubs for exposure. Soon we started playing for Harlequins RFC and ended up being the first black Kenyans to do so.Another former student Leslie Mwachiro, who plied his trade for Impala RFC explained Kevin's efforts to erase the prejudice in the game, "In 1974 he was instrumental in the formation of Miro RFC which was the first all black rugby team in the league. It later evolved into Mean Machine of Nairobi University and Blak Blad of Kenyatta University as the members were also university students. These grew into Mwamba after we graduated"

recent violent rioting by students of kenyatta university has inadvertently meant the death of the taem's xv season.gone is the chairmans cup and contesting in the annual floodlights along with the union's eric shierly shield seems highly unlikely the longer the school is closed.there's a real possibillity of no xv rugby for the rest of the year until the sevens season begin.these developments may retard all the growth expirienced in the programme since the current kenya xv coach,mike'tank'otieno ,ressurected the team in the late nineties from the old division 3 right up to the top flight in 1996 setting the foundations for all our future sucess.the hope is that the impasse ends in a timely fashion and the season get back on track for such a gifted team that holds the promise of a trophy or two this year

traditionally every year,alumni rugby players of the ku.men's varsity team square off with the institution's current team.the usually competitive affair is followed by a few drinks washed down with old war stories from the elders about their time playing for blad.the previous match was carried by the varsity lads thanks to dubious decisions by one cal biko,this year the wazee's wised up and out foxed their much younger opponents using the brute force of the fowards marshalled by big sam litaba.micheal andiva didnot dissapoint,his runs caused havoc that the likes of lawrence tesot ,oddly playing at prop, profited greatly from.the few times the ball went out to the backs,jack otieno,nick yauma,vic wachira,and e.oganga exploited cal biko's devastating bursts of pace and power..late on,wen old age crept on the old ,felix wawire dived over for two face saving tries,had he not,the lads would have never lived down a 65-0 hiding

it was a case of reversed roles as the blakkies burnt the arsonist for pace and power over the weekend.moi could not stem the tide as wave after wave of attacks nullified any thoughts the latter had of repeating last year's upset win at the blad bin.whats remarkable isn't the 50 points racked up by the victorius blakkies,it's the manner in which a team full of freshmen blanked the highly rated arsonist for nought even with the distinct size diadvantage.blad just ran at them from everywhere.inthe the end that's set up the pre season win

the annual cash with the club's alumni will be held on 7th march 2009 at the blad bin with a dinner later on in the evening..its something worth looking foward to especialy with the wazees out to restore normal transmission after their 2007 loss.no doubt their ranks will be boosted by the elegibility of rodney anami,melvin obadha and william odhiambo whose backrow play was fundermental to the programme's success in ther previous 4 years.lawrence 'amy'tesot will also be a welcome introduction to the wazee set up which had been starved for pace out wide but coupled with calvins biko's entry at 15 and jay yauma at 10..the blakkies may face their biggest challenge yet from the old farts
